Pre-Med Requirements: Undergraduate Courses and GPA Undergraduate Coursework In the past, if you wanted to go to med school you almost had to be a science major, and college advisors encouraged undergrads to concentrate on typical "premed" fields like biology, chemistry, and physics. Today, you have more choice. Most med schools encourage students to pursue a broad, liberal arts education and place more emphasis on the breadth and depth of coursework than the area of study. Still, admissions committees need to know that you can handle the rigors of science-intensive med school coursework and main-tain certain minimum requirements. Although mandatory courses vary somewhat from school to school, the basic requirements at most schools are as follows: Courses: Biology or Zoology Inorganic Chemistry Organic Chemistry Physics English A number of schools also require coursework in calculus or college-level math, behavioral science, the humanities, and computers. Some more competitive schools require advanced-level science courses, especially for students who meet basic requirements through high school advanced placement credits.

Pre Medical Test | Pre Med Tests

The MCAT is offered twice a year (April and August) and is usually taken at the end of the junior year or just before the senior year. The day-long test covers four areas: reading skills analysis, including literature, social science, and natural science passages; biological science problem solving; physical science problem solving; and two 30-minute essays. There are a number of privately owned test-preparation programs. For a substantial fee, usually over $1,300, these organizations provide review classes, study materials, and practice tests. Participation in these programs is entirely up to you. On the one hand, they provide a structured review of the material that will be covered on the MCAT. (Note that they do NOT substitute for actual college coursework--they are meant to review courses already taken.) On the other hand, they are expensive and do not accomplish anything that you could not accomplish on your own with study guides and practice tests that are available at the University Bookstore or from the AAMC. The AAMC practice tests are preferred. A list of the websites for the private test-preparation programs is at the end of this document. (Although most of the businesses sound like they are associated with well known universities, none of them is.) Most of their websites include general information of interest to premed students, as well as links to other sites, and are worth visiting. Please note that we will not make recommendations regarding test-preparation courses.
